Just three miles away is the Whinlatter Forest Visitor Centre which has many woodland walks as well as interesting nature-related activities, for adults and children of all ages, including the newly introduced Go Ape. Closer still is Honister Slate Mine with fantastic caverns and the newly opened Via Ferrata - Classic, not for the faint hearted.
Other activities include bird-watching in the surrounding area, breath-taking views for practicing art enthusiasts and many photographic opportunities.
Close by is Keswick, a traditional Lakeland town on the shores of Derwentwater. Here you can take in a show at the newly built and nationally acclaimed Theatre by the Lake, cruise courtesy of the Keswick Launch Company or spend a happy afternoon shopping in one of the many and diverse shops.
The Lake District has many literary connections. You can see the ancient Yew that Wordsworth wrote about, in the Vale of Lorton or visit his birthplace - Wordsworth House in Cockermouth - an attractive nearby Lakeland town.
